Fungal nail infections are a common foot problem that can affect anyone, young or old. It’s nothing to do with poor hygiene and won’t do you any harm.
The infection is caused by an ‘opportunistic fungus’ that lives on everyone’s skin and nails. If your nail is subject to an injury which weakens the nail plate you are more likely to develop the infection. Over manicuring is an example of how you can damage the nail, which may lead to fungal nail problem.
Unfortunately, once you have an infection like this it is nortoriously difficult to get rid of. There are many over the counter (OTC) remedies both medicated and herbal in addition to laser therapy and in some cases nail surgery to remove the afflicted nail altogether but aside from nail removal, it is very difficult to resolve the problem in spite of all these available treatments.
You may wish to leave it alone if it’s a minor infection but sometimes the nail can become thick and uncomfortable in footwear.
